How to Be Productive Over Winter Break

How to Be Productive Over Winter Break Those last assignments are turned in and the final exams have been taken. Fall semester has come to a close and the freedom of winter break is finally upon you. Now the question is: what do you with it? What do you do with so much free time when are you are free from worries of schoolwork? Most students take the position of relaxing doing absolutely nothing else. There is certainly nothing wrong with that; after all, you deserve it after all the hard work youve done. But for those of you who want to accomplish something a little more, how can you best take advantage of this time off? There are plenty of ways to use this break so you can feel like youve done something positive for your academic life and have made yourself somehow better prepared for the semester ahead of you. Although you initially may want to avoid doing any work at all over this next month, youd be surprised at how quickly you can find yourself extremely bored at home when there is no school to keep you busy. You dont need to be doing something heavy every day, but a few side projects to keep you intrigued can be a good idea. Of course there is no shortage of things to do to keep yourself entertained over break, but wouldnt it be nice to know that some of the activities youre taking part in will improve your schooling experience? Just think about how relieved and content youll feel when you return to that first day of classes knowing that you have already taken care of some pressing needs for your academic support system. What are these needs exactly? They can be anything from getting the best deals on textbooks, to purchasing new notebooks, to reviewing the class syllabus, to familiarizing yourself with your schedule. This is the part where you can get creative and figure out what helps you personally in the classroom. What gets you excited for school? What makes the learning process easier for you? If these questions are left until that first week back, youll probably be far too overwhelmed with all of the back-to-school commotion to really be able to focus on answering them. In situations like this, you look back and wonder why you didnt take advantage of all that free time when you had it That is why it is best for you to make a priority list right away when your break begins so you have clear ideas of what you want to accomplish and how to get them done. Try not to make this list too lengthy or else youll find yourself intimidated by its plethora of work and be tempted to just push it aside. This list should inspire you by reminding you of things you genuinely want to get done that will make your life easier come mid-January. Here are some guidelines to think about to help you get started on a productive winter break: Fresh School Supplies: Go through all of the binders, notebooks, pens, rulers, and anything else that you would find necessary for a class. Sometimes it feels great to just go out and buy all new supplies for the next semester. However, sometimes it can also feel good to use up what you have. Perhaps you have a notebook that was barely written in past its first three pages from fall semester instead of throwing it out, just rip out the first few used pages and label it for a different class. You may be able to accumulate a lot of fresh supplies just by breaking down the items you already have. On the same token, however, dont always use certain supplies just because you already have them. If your highlighters are quickly drying out, go ahead and buy a new set. No need to feel obligated to suffer through that annoyance until the very last stroke of color. Have both sets on hand so nothing goes to waste, but that you are still prepared for a final malfunction at a moments notice. Most importantly, think carefully about what kind of note-taking each of your classes will require of you and assign various supplies accordingly. Make sure you have a notebook with hundreds of pages for that math class you know will be asking you to solve problem after problem and save those lesser-paged notebooks for other courses that are more discussion based. Whether you purchase all new items or get creative with what materials you have, just make sure your final set of supplies makes you feel refreshed and confident to approach the next semester. Here is some great information on how to save on college suppliesthat you may want to take a look at. Rest: As a natural human being, sleep is one of the big necessities for any productive process. Get plenty of rest during your time off so you are guaranteed to feel very rejuvenated come the return of school. Moreover, getting enough rest during winter break will improve your progress of completing your priority list. A tired person cannot achieve these goals easily. Most importantly, you do not want to start off your spring semester exhausted before anything has even begun. Youre going to have plenty of time to be fighting for rest once the curriculum gets rolling dont make things harder on yourself than they need to be. As productive as you want to be over winter break, dont work so much that you lose time to sleep. It can be tempting to stay up all night every night when you have no school in the morning, but doing that also makes you more exhausted the next day, even if you do sleep in. Practice the appropriate sleep discipline now and you will not only be more relaxed for the school year, you will be better trained to keep up this sleeping pattern throughout the semester. Here is some great information on the importance of sleepthat you may want to check out. Review Your Schedule: You might think, I dont need to worry about next semesters schedule right now, I can just take a look at it a few days before the semester begins. You could do this, but it will just make digesting the schedule more of a challenge for you. Both reviewing the times and places of your classes as well as the content of your classes is very important. The earlier on that you get well-acquainted with this information, the better. If you gradually spend time over break checking out your schedule, youre more likely to feel very comfortable with it by the time school starts up again. Memorizing everything in a rush the night before the first day of school is dangerous for the same reasons cramming the night before a test is dangerous it is just not healthy and not promising. Make sure you have at least an idea of where each class is so you can visualize in your head how youll be getting there every day. Additionally, become familiar with the order of the classes so you can have a good idea of which areas youll be traveling between at what times. Get a feel for what kind of time crunches youll be under so there is no major pressure when the time comes. Take some time to review your course descriptions as well, if available. Some teachers even choose to post the syllabus online early which is something you should definitely take advantage of. It can be reassuring to know exactly what is going to be expected of you before that first day arrives when youre already intimidated by everything else going on. This information can help you indicate what kind of supplies you need, how much class interaction will be involved, and how much outside study time youll need to set aside. Do your best to understand these elements of each of your classes and collectively look at them. That is a sure-fire way to comprehend what your next semester will be like and what kind of things you need to get done now to prepare for them. You may also want to take a look at the se 5 new year's resolutions for schoolthat may help you jump start your new year. Ultimately, the key to a productive winter break is thinking ahead. Think of things that typically frustrate you in the middle of the school year that leave you to wonder: why didnt I take care of this beforehand? Whether that be buying a sturdy enough binder for all of those English notes, having extra batteries on hand for your calculator, knowing how long it is going to take you to get from one morning class to the other, or being prepared with questions for your Physics teacher whose course is just daunting to you. Smooth things over now so you can be ready to go once the school year goes back into motion.

What is Timbre in Music and the Voice Why is it Important

What is Timbre in Music and the Voice Why is it Important Sign up successful What is Timbre? Understanding timbre in music is important for all musicians, especially singers, when you want to produce a different tone or quality in a piece of music. Different timbres are described using words like brassy, breathy, round, full, or bright. You can use different types of vocal timbre to create a sound that gives the right “feel” or emotion to your music. It’s not just about playing or singing with feeling. You should know how a tone is utilized to achieve that emotion. The sound waves produced when someone sings a note are different for each individual person because there are multiple factors that go into the production of a sound, such as breath. The timbre of a sound depends heavily on its waveform, which varies with the number of overtones (AKA “harmonics”) that are present, their frequencies, and their relative intensities. The illustration below shows several unique waveforms, to give you an idea of what this looks like. Timbre in Music Musicians create varying timbres, based on both their instrument and the number of frequencies the instrument emits. Each note from a musical instrument is a complex wave containing more than one frequency. The video below examines the timbre of several different instruments and explains how the way that you play an instrument affects its timbre.   One example of timbre in music is known as “attack and decay.” When someone plucks a guitar string or strikes a piano key, the sound is hit forcefully; it’s loud and then sort of dies away. This explains how the same note can have a different timbre when played differently by another musician. Factors that Affect Timbre So, what factors affect timbre in music? There are multiple, depending on the instrument. For example, the way someone pushes air through an oboe will contribute to the sound frequencies that are emitted and the way it is heard, giving it a distinguished timbre. Things like forced air, breath control, posture, and so on are all factors that affect timbre. Small differences in the frequencies are also a factor how many you can hear, their relationship to the pitch, and how loud they are. The shape of an instrument and the envelope of an instrument’s sound both affect its timbre. Check out the video below to see the differences within sound waves when playing the same note from instrument to instrument.     Timbre in the Voice When singing, your timbre is affected by either constricting or opening different parts of the vocal tract, like the tongue and throat. Posture and breath control also play a role. Most singers are familiar with their voice type whether it’s soprano, alto, tenor, or bass and these classifications are related to timbre as well. Understanding which sound waves are high, low, and mid-level can help you identify your voice type. Your speaking voice even has its own timbre. The unique soundwaves you create when speaking are what allow you to be recognized by others. Common examples of timbre in the voice are sounds that are piercing, resonant, light, flat, mellow, dark, or warm. One example is Celine Dion. Her voice is often categorized as “silky,” whereas someone like Ella Fitzgerald has more of a “smoky” timbre. Vibrato is another way to identify timbre in a singing voice. It provides color to a lengthy note that is held, changing its frequency and tone. Improving Your Sound Now that you understand the implications of timbre, how can you apply them to your own music? One of the best ways to improve upon your timbre as a singer is to work with a vocal coach someone who has a deep understanding of timbre and its use. A voice teacher can work exclusively with you to help you identify your distinct quality and tone. They’ll also show you how to adjust it to get the sound and pitch you desire, especially when working on a particular song that requires a specific emotion or feeling. Because there is no one else like you in the world, learn to appreciate and take pride in your unique timbre. Whether you’re a singer or musician, your timbre sets you apart and helps distinguish you from other artists! Need Private Lessons? Search thousands of teachers for local and live, online lessons. Web-based online tutoring platform does not have the huge expense overhead that physical tutoring centers have. For the same reason, it allows tutoring websites to offer lower prices and save your pockets too. Thanks to the online tutoring websites!

Simple but Powerful Test Taking Strategies Part 2

Simple but Powerful Test Taking Strategies Part 2 GRE/MAT Graduate School Blog In part one of our “Common Test Taking Strategies” series, we noted that strategy is an intrinsic part of preparing for standardized tests, and that without the proper strategies even the most advanced students find themselves performing below their full potential. We discussed several proven test taking strategies, including using official test prep materials produced by the same company administering the exam (i.e., the Real ACT Prep Guide if you’re taking the ACT), focusing on what the question is actually asking, scanning all potential answers before choosing one, assuming nothing when deciding which answer is best, and making abstractions concrete. In part two, we’ll cover five additional test taking strategies: Reading and retention “pauses” for long reading comprehension passages Answering easy questions first Time management Providing overly structured responses Test “mentality” Reading Retention During reading comprehension sections, when you encounter a particularly long passage, pause after each section to quickly summarize the preceding paragraph in a single sentence. This will help you to internalize the main ideas as your progress through the reading, rather than reaching the end only to realize you retained very little of what you’ve just read Answer the Easy Questions First As tests are timed, rather than spending a lot of time struggling with a hard question, skip it and use this time to answer many easier questions, coming back to it if you have time. This simply allows you to answer more questions correctly, which will boost your score. Note, however, that not all tests allow you to use this strategy. For example, the GMAT is “computer adaptive” and only lets you move on once you answer a given question. To help you visualize this scenario; if you were picking apples and you only had 5 minutes to pick as many apples of possible, would you waste time climbing a ladder in an attempt to reach fruit on the tallest branches or would you remain firmly on the ground where apples are in plain sight and reach? Managing Your Time Standardized tests produce time pressure, and the need to answer questions both quickly and correctly can be quite anxiety inducing. Utilizing a time tool to pace yourself on these exams has been shown to improve time management while simultaneously lowering anxiety. Time management used in tandem with previous tips on answering easy questions first or reading the questions first in reading comprehension can prove beneficial. However, a relentless need to check your watch should not create another layer of anxiety. Don’t get bogged down in keeping a specific pace-per-question and looking to the clock incessantly, time management is most beneficial once you learn the art of balance. Don’t consult your time tool too often or infrequently. It is most constructive to recognize if you are ahead, on time, or behind schedule and to modify your pace accordingly. If you get accustomed to working at an almost uncomfortably swift pace, once you encounter tougher questions you have padded your time a bit by working quickly and can spend a little more time on the most challenging questions. Give a Structured Response The Writing section can trip-up even the best, most well equipped writers. Contrary to what you may believe, this not the time for complex writing. It is more beneficial for you to write succinctly and in a highly structured fashion. This accomplishes a couple of things; structure helps you organize your thoughts, ensuring you write clearly and concisely. Giving a structured response also helps your grader follow your train of thought/argumentation, ultimately leading to a higher score. If you attempt to write a complex essay under the time constraints of the test, you may simply not have enough time to flesh-out your point and provide adequate examples. Similarly, graders only spend a few minutes on each test, without structure, an essay is hard to follow and this lack of clarity will assuredly kill your score. Keep it simple; be sure to provide a clear thesis (this is the most important - what are you arguing?), introduce your idea/stance, explain why, provide examples and conclude. Mentality It’s pretty simple: the better you feel, the better you perform. Be sure that you are your best-self on test day. You should be: well rested and nourished and both physically and mentally, present and poised. Pay attention to your posture and breathing, don’t let nerves get the best of you. Confidence is key, this does not begin on test day, but in the days, weeks and even months leading up to it. In order to get your mind right, you must feel confident in your prep. Give yourself adequate time to prepare; don’t cram, as this only increases anxiety. Your preparation will bolster your confidence come test day. Recognize as you prepare, that there will be times where you feel stressed and possibly overwhelmed. You have to learn to accept these feelings and work to move beyond them, learn from your mistakes and adjust your methods accordingly, putting your full energy into prep. Visualize yourself performing well on the test and the future opportunities that it will bring you. Lisa Alvarado is a Managing Tutor with MyGuru. English Collocations with Plan Learn English with Harry

English Collocations with Plan Learn English with Harry Today I have some English collocations with plan or dealing with plans, either single or plural. Okay. This is Harry and welcome back to my podcast Speak Better English with Harry where I try to help you understand and make better use of your English. So Ive got a number of English collocations which go together with plan or plans and I’ll try and explain them to you. English Collocations with Plan Don't be selfish, share it with your friends So we can have bold plans or a bold plan.We can have audacious plans or an audacious plan.We can have daring plans or a daring plan. And an ingenious plan.So bold, daring, audacious and ingenious basically have the same meaning. Means something really exciting, something that somebody else might not try.Example: Theres a bold plan to develop the 5G network throughout the country so that every house can have 5G in fast internet connection.A bold plan because there are millions of houses that have to be upgraded. We can have a daring plan to rescue people that have been kidnapped by some terrorist organization. A daring plan, which involves counter-espionage and certain soldiers who work in covert operations. So they operate in secrecy. So theyre going to try and rescue these people who have been kidnapped or held to ransom. We can have an audacious plan.Audacious means something really nobody else would have thought about.Example:They had an audacious plan to overthrow the government by refusing to vote or to demonstrate outside the parliament buildings and bring pressure on the government. Something that other political groups had not considered. An audacious plan, really something that nobody had considered. An ingenious plan meaning a very clever plan, something again that nobody had considered because it was just too ingenious, too clever. So bold plans, daring plans, audacious plans quite risky audacious plans or an ingenious plan.Example:They developed an ingenious plan to get to Mars.An ingenious plan to get to Mars by, first of all, flying to the moon, building a station on the moon, extracting water from some resource that theyve discovered on the moon, creating energy and then flying to Mars. Okay. English Collocations with Plan Don't be selfish, share it with your friends We can also shelve of a plan, meaning to put it on the shelf, were not going to go ahead with it.So literally like when you take a book and youve finished reading it, you put it on the shelf because youre not going to to read it any more.So when we have a plan, and we shelve the plan, literally we pick it up and put it somewhere because weve decided that, okay, might be a good plan, but now is not the time to implement it. So weve shelved plans.Example:The government have shelved plans to extend the runway in Heathrow airport. To abandon plans. Well, abandon is a little bit more serious than that. We had a plan, but because of cost overruns, weve abandoned it.Weve just decided, its not going to go ahead.Weve downed tools, as the say, and decided to pull out.Example: The County Council had abandoned plans to make some upgrades to the water system. We can scrap plans. To scrap something means to make it redundant. A scrap is something thats no longer have any value. Like an old car, that is 25 years old and rusted, is only worth scrap. Meaning we break it up and use the good parts, but discard the rest. So we can scrap a plan, like a bit of paper. We roll it up in a ball and we throw it away.Example:Unfortunately, they have  scrapped the plans of reintroducing it.The more former word to say to jettison a plan.Jettison is often used in the shipping industry when a ship is at sea and it has a dirty water or something, it jettisons it, it throws it literally into the water.Or an airplane if its circling overhead and has to make an emergency landing, it will, first of all, jettison some fuel to reduce the weight. So to jettison or to scrap it or to get rid of it. Okay.So these are the words that collocate with plan:a bold planan audaciousan ingenious planto abandon the planto scrap a planto jettison a planOkay, so these are all Engl ish collocations with plan. Hopefully youve enjoyed this English lesson.Clever, effective and efficient, cheap way for you to improve your English language skills.Again, thanks for listening, join me again soon.
